A silent auction, local Shreveport-Bossier cuisine and live music are highlights planned for Holy Angels’ annual Taste of Shreveport-Bossier event Oct. 17.

Now in its 33rd year, the event attracts more than 1,000 guests with proceeds benefitting the nearly 50-year-old Shreveport-based organization, which serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The event is hosted by the Knights of Columbus Broadmoor Council, which has raised more than $1.5 million for Holy Angels over the lifetime of the Taste of Shreveport-Bossier’event.

“We act upon the first principle that the Knights are founded upon – charity – in our daily lives and dedicate our actions to help the angels at Holy Angels,” David Merrick, of the Knights of Columbus Broadmoor Council, said. “None of this could have been possible without the selfless contributions from Shreveport-Bossier area restaurants and beverage distributors, sponsors and event participants.”

Guests will have the opportunity to support Holy Angels during a silent auction of items made by Holy Angels residents, community artists and community vendors.

The auction will showcase over 100 pieces of artwork, jewelry, ceramics and sewing items created by the Holy Angels’ residents and AngelWorks Day Program participants as well as generous donations and artwork from local community artists and businesses.

“Holy Angels believes that all people have the right to learn, to achieve and, in turn, find dignity and purpose in life,” Laurie Boswell, CEO of Holy Angels, said. “This belief is realized through the AngelWorks Day Program, which provides meaningful work for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.”

AngelWorks teaches job skills and provides employment in horticulture, creative arts, culinary arts, and business services. Each enterprise allows participants to create, exhibit and sell work, promoting pride in personal achievement and giving back to the community. The renowned products created are sold in the Holy Angels’ David Toms’ AngelWorks Gift Shop.

“Residents aren’t just working in a job. They are utilizing their creative genius,” Boswell said. “Many of our residents have a connection to the divine. They have an understanding of the joy of living that we don’t, and you can see that joy in what they create.”

Taste of Shreveport-Bossier guests will also enjoy culinary delights from 20 Shreveport-Bossier City vendors including: Aly B’s Bakery, Buffalo Wild Wings, Chocolate Crocodile, Coca-Cola, Cupcake Gallery, Drake Catering, Eagle Distributing of Shreveport, East Ridge Country Club, Market 104 Hilton Shreveport, Monjunis, P&S Pantry, Red Mango, Republic National Distributing Company, Rhino Coffee, Shane’s Seafood and BBQ, Shreveport Firefighter Union, Texas Street Steakhouse, Village Cuisine Catering & Café, Wine Country and Zocolo.

And event participants will be treated to live music during the evening, featuring The Harmon Drew Super Group, Centenary Suzuki School of Music students, and a special performance by the Holy Angels’ Choir, directed by Dr. Herb Armentrout.
