| ART/EXHIBITS MARCH 17: RAINFOREST ART FOUNDATION’S

2016 GREEN ARTS PARTY, New York City artist, Dennis Cady, will show his wood sculptures with an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m at the Rainforest Art Foundation. The party is free with a suggested $10 donation and will feature a cash spiked green apple smoothie bar, sea foam chocolate and nature inspired arts. Cady’s exhibit will be on display through May 27.

MARCH 19: OPEN HOUSE AND ART SHOW, The South Art Gallery opens to showcase some of the best local artists. Meet the artists and see new works. Food, drinks and entertainment will be provided. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. 6509 Line Ave., Shreveport.

MARCH 20-APRIL 29: “ALPHA & OMEGA: ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE THROUGH THE GENERATIONS,” a two-woman show featuring work by grandmother and grand-daughter artists Emily Cameron Pressly and Catherine Pressly Harding. THROUGH MARCH 27: PAPER ZOO, Recently liberated from the Norton’s vaults, these stunning images will strut, stroll, shimmer and swoop along the walls, capturing the color and spirit of these denizens of the forest and savannahs, and memory, since one of the visitors is extinct and several others are on the brink. Both famous and lesser-known artists have chosen to take a hand at capturing these wild things; Frederic Remington contributed a coyote, Antoine-Louis-Barye a tiger, and Gutzon Borglum a lion. The exhibit is located at the North Wing Corridor at R.W. Norton Art Gallery.

THROUGH MARCH 31: ART BY BRAD SMITH, The Bossier Arts Council is happy to announce Brad Smith as the latest local artist for the Emerging Artist Gallery. Smith is a largely self-taught painter who works various styles and subject matters. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.Tuesday through Saturday.

THROUGH MARCH 31: BPCC FACULTY ART SHOW, Kelly McDade’s exhibit “POPular Mechanics” will be on display at the Donna Service Gallery, located in Building A on the college campus. The art exhibition is the first of the 2016 spring semester in the gallery.

APRIL 1-MAY 31: “BEE” BY BAYGENT BAKER, The Bossier Arts Council will feature the artworks of Baygent Baker in the Emerging Artist Gallery. She is self-taught, specializing in colored pencil and acrylic paint and greatly influenced by nature. An opening reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. April 9 at the Bossier Arts Council, located at 630 Barksdale Blvd., Bossier City.

APRIL 2: AZALEA FESTIVAL, Plan to spend the day at the R.W. Norton Art Gallery’s Azalea Festival. Showcasing over 15,000 plants including approximately100 native and hybrid varieties of azaleas at the prime time of the year, the event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the 40-acre gardens behind the museum. While enjoying a tour through the beautiful gardens, have your garden questions answered by volunteers from Northwest Louisiana Master Gardeners, the Shreveport Garden Study Club and the Society for Louisiana Irises.

APRIL 2-MAY 15: BLOOM!, In coordination with our first ever Azalea Festival, the R.W. Norton Art Gallery will be showcasing local talent in the form of a new exhibition, BLOOM! This exhibition will focus on flowering plants and the beauty of nature.

THROUGH APRIL 9: MEREDITH PIPER ARTIST RECEPTION will be from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Agora Borealis for her encased weavings art show. The reception is free to the public. Piper’s encased weavings will be displayed through April 9.

THROUGH APRIL 30: ARTWORK OF MIKE TORMA, The Bossier Arts Council presents Mike Torma’s artwork on display at Boomtown Casino’s 1800 Prime Steakhouse. THROUGH APRIL 30: CUTTING DOWN THE TREE OF LIFE, This two-part display, conceived by alumna Emily Fultz, contrasts vibrant Haitian “Tree of Life” paintings from the 1970s and 1980s with contemporary photographs of Haiti’s deforestation for charcoal fuel production, captured by New York City photojournalist Jonathan Auch is hosted by the Meadows Museum of Art on the Centenary College campus.

THROUGH MAY 15: #HASHTAGGING HISTORY EXHIBIT, This special exhibit will explore famous hashtags as well as a unique look at historical figures through a modern format. The exhibit is in the North Wing Exhibition Galleries.

THROUGH MAY 29: “VITAMIN SEA: SALT WATER AND SUNSHINE,” Susie Barrett’s latest collection will be displayed at Origin’s Bank, located on 1350 E. 70th St., Shreveport. She specializes in oil over acrylic and textured acrylics on canvas and is influenced by vibrant colors of the tropics, water and infinity patterns.

APRIL 14, 16: “SUSANNAH,” Written during the McCarthy era as a reaction to artistic persecution, Susannah is based loosely on the Apocryphal tale of Susannah and the Elders. Carlisle Floyd’s opera is a collaboration of the Hurley School of Music and Marjorie Lyons Playhouse and is the final production of MLP’s 2015-16 Why, Unto Others? season. This production is fully staged and supported by an orchestra comprised of members of the Shreveport Symphony, conducted by Kermit Poling.

APRIL 14-17, 21-23: “THE LITTLE MERMAID,” Tickets go on sale March 28 for the SBC debut of the Broadway version of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Stage Center’s second production in their fifth anniversary season, with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and a book by Doug Wright.
