UNDISPUTED!

Battle closes out UNSCENE!

The final UNSCENE! Arts Residency Series event for the Shreveport Regional Arts Council is planned for 5 p.m. Aug.

9 at Millennium Studios, 300 Douglas St. in Shreveport. “UNDISPUTED!” will be an art challenge to determine which team can create interesting works of art in only 30 minutes that will engage the audience.

The winner will walk away with $10,000. “With the past UNSCENES, we have brought in a national artist to work with local artists, and we paid the local artists to work with the national artist. This time, we aren’t bringing in the national artist. We are giving the big chunk of change to the local artist, which is why they can win $10,000,” Casey Jones, marketing director for SRAC, said. “There will be national critics here to be judges. We are hoping to have no more than eight teams for the competition that will compete in four rounds. The teams all have to be in the SRAC artist directory, are encouraged to have a team outfit, will be people of all ages and backgrounds.”

During the four rounds, competitors will have a variety of challenges thrown their way. Teams will be given a $500 stipend in advance for materials and will come prepared for the first round with an idea in mind.

“Round 1, the participants will know generally what they know what they are going to create. As the teams go forward, we will add the ‘secret ingredient,’ which is something we will throw into the mix that they have to use – similar to a show like ‘Iron Chef,’” Jones said. “There is talk of a particular muse coming in during a later round that you will have a person or a thing that will help influence you, or maybe uninspire you. It could be a positive or negative force, so it’s a secret ingredient but of a different type.”

will take place inside the air conditioned comfort of Millennium Studios, but the feel will remain true to that of the previous UNSCENE! events.

“You will be able to walk around to see what’s going on, and we will have cameras projecting the action onto the big screen,” Jones said. “The arts market will be inside, and the food truck and beer truck will be outside as well. There will be tokens you can purchase to cast a vote for your favorite teams. It’s $10 to get in, but that gives you 10 votes, and you can purchase additional tokens for 50 cents,” Jones said. “The audience vote will count for 48 percent of the vote, and the critics will have 52 percent of the vote. We are really hoping the money from this event will go into having more UNSCENES.”

Two disc jockeys will also be on hand to inspire the artists in their creative process.

SRAC is still working on writing grants to continue events like UNSCENE!, though the focus may shift from bringing in national artists to a local focus. “We will be working with the Makers Fair again, we will be doing The Big Scene again, and in between, we will have events that will be for funding the arts locally. We will see the word UNSCENE! continue; we aren’t going to walk away from it that easily,” Jones said.
