Krewe of Highland member Robert Trudeau recently retired from his 35-year gig as a Caddo Magnet High School teacher, but no one really sees him slowing down much.

“United Way works on the community as a whole,” Martin said. “Whereas individual agencies work on a specific issue, our grant process works to solve the issues from homelessness to job loss to literacy. Therefore, by giving to United Way, dollars are invested wisely in programming and people, and not buildings and administrative costs of nonprofits.

I often wish I could stroll the streets of Highland, a historic neighborhood in Shreveport, back when it was first evolving. I could hop on a trolley and do some shopping and have lunch at a counter with my neighbors. I could visit some of the wonderful homes just as they existed then.

Red River Balloon Rally and 2016 U.S. Hot Air Balloon Championship

CUE WAGNER’S “RIDE OF THE VALKYRIES.” Hot air balloons are about to descend on Shreveport-Bossier City. The Red River Balloon Rally, along with the 2016 U.S. Hot Air Balloon Championship, will take place July 14 – July 20, throughout the metro area, with festivities to be held on the campus of LSUS.

Dr. Bill Bussey has been a hot air balloon pilot since 1977 and holds 15 world records. Bussey created the Great Texas Balloon Race in Longview, Texas, in 1978 and is also credited with producing the very first ever balloon glow in 1981. “These events draw so many people,” he said.
