Winning Together
The Importance of Inclusivity in the Realm of Sports
The Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission prides itself on being diverse, internally and externally. This includes everything from our staff and community partners to sporting events and funding opportunities. As an extension of the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau, we make an effort to represent all visitors, no matter their background. I firmly believe that good food, great music and the world of sports can drive people from different upbringings into one room without friction.
“The tourism industry is a feelgood industry, and that’s why it attracts everyone from different backgrounds and interests,” said Brandy Evans, vice president of communications at the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau. “We pride ourselves on rolling out the red carpet for people of all ages, backgrounds and ethnicities. That’s why Shreveport-Bossier resonates with countless visitors, and they often return for another round of authentic hospitality.”
On Tuesday, Dec. 10, Mayor Adrian Perkins initiated a new commission to tackle racial and cultural relations in Shreveport in hopes that the committee is a reflection of the local residents, and I support this notion. This committee’s mission is to tackle tough issues to ensure that locals have a voice and feel included in the community.
All in all, the same initiatives are practiced on the Sports Commission Board of Directors. Each board member provides their influence on local events that we host, sponsor or fund. Forming a committee forces multiple voices to be heard and considered before moving forward with a final decision. The main focus is a concrete win for the organization and community. Coordinating sporting events present the same laser-focus to ensure success.
At last year’s Sports Biz Connect, we were intentional about seeking a wide array of community participation, sporting activities and individual competitors, which established networking opportunities and highlighted the importance of teamwork. Corporate teams were a blend of men and women from different professional industries with various strengths and weaknesses.
The Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission offers a wide selection of exciting sporting events and will continue to invest in diverse opportunities that vary from athlete to location, as well as fans and venues. As sports people, we have one goal in mind: winning. However, winning together is key.
