Sci-Port Recharged
Facility opens in phases with new Gallery of Intrigue exhibit
Sci-Port Discovery Center, a major regional attraction closed since the “stay at home” ruling in early March, is partially open. This will include the new Gallery of Intrigue, featuring employeeguided Adventures of Intrigue, as well as the IMAX Theatre and the Sawyer Space Dome Planetarium.
Entering Phase 2 of the governor’s reopening initiative, only the first floor is currently accessible. Changes to hours and pricing are reflected in this change. General admission will temporarily change to $10 per visitors over the age of 12 months and will include admission to an IMAX movie and access to employeeled activities and demonstrations.
Sci-Port is currently open Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Sunday from 12 – 5 p.m.
The new Gallery of Intrigue offers unique learning experiences for people of all ages, with a focus on our ecosystem and Northwest Louisiana history. Upon entering through a three-dimensional train station, visitors experience an explorative walk-thru gallery featuring a variety of exhibits including:
• Dockside (inspired by the steam wheelers, import and export business, and the oil manufacturing industry),
• Inventors Mansion (a two-story mansion façade inspired by the home of Captain Henry Miller Shreve),
• Caddo Cabin (inspired by the local culture and ecosystem),
• Cityscape, 50’ tall mural, which includes a “Peek-A-Boo” section to entice guests to identify indigenous birds of our region. This Louisiana-themed area represents a partnership with the Caddo Lake Institute and the Louisiana Audubon Society.
The $10 general admission fee will temporarily include one IMAX movie. Guests can enjoy “Hubble” at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and “SuperPower Dogs” at 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and “Hubble” at 1 p.m. and “SuperPower Dogs” at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Members and their guests can enjoy an IMAX movie for $4.
Executive Director Dianne Clark says, “As we transition to Phase 2 of the Covid-19 guidelines, every effort is being made to protect our staff and guests. We have installed hand sanitation stations, established limited exhibit access, and implemented stringent cleaning and capacity regulations.”
Due to social distancing protocols, Sci-Port will be limiting the number of people into each section of the first floor. Purchasing tickets online in advance is encouraged to ensure capacity limits are followed carefully. Walk-in guests are welcome but are admitted as capacity allows.
