Most people have heard of diabetes and know that it’s a condition when blood glucose (sugar) levels are high. What many may not know is that high blood glucose can lead to damage to a lot of organs and tissues throughout the body.

“My mom needs insulin to live,” Zoë Massery of Ward, Ark., pleaded in her fundraiser. “I don’t know what I would do without my mom. I am 16 years old and still need my mother. I see the stress that my mom and other people have of wondering if they are going to be able to get the stuff they need to live, along with tons and tons of other bills.

In Louisiana alone, approximately half a million people have diabetes, and almost 40% of the adult population are “prediabetic.” According to the Center for Disease Control’s National Diabetes Fact Sheet, the state of Louisiana ranks ninth for the highest.

If you checked one or more of the items on this list, you should talk to your doctor about prediabetes. These symptoms are present in the 88 million Americans who have this condition, which can lead to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, nerve damage and kidney damage.
