I WONDER SOMETIMES

What lies ahead for us?

I sit and wonder sometimes.

• In just a few decades how the world and people have changed. It makes me wish for the good old days before cell phones, computers, social media and 24-hour cable television news. There seems to be very little human interaction any more. Everyone is either on a cell phone or another electronic device, locked away in their own little world. And when there is human interaction, everyone seems to be in an unhappy, combative mood.

And there is very little privacy anymore. Everyone has a cell phone with a camera. So be careful out there. It seems some forget that once they press that send button, the picture is in cyberspace forever. That goes for politicians, in particular.

• How some people can be so hateful, yet believe they are wonderful Christians and rush to church every Sunday? They seem to have no compassion for people less fortunate or have hit a bit of bad luck or just plain disagree with them on any issue. Their hate is often prevalent in politics. They hate President Obama because he is black and/ or a Democrat and want him to fail. Why would any American want our president, regardless of party, to fail?

The hate has no political party label. Both Democrats or Republicans are guilty with no notion of respect for a difference of opinion or a willingness to compromise. Republicans – not all of them – hate U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu even though she is in an influential position to do plenty of good for Louisiana because she is a Democrat or because of one vote she made. I use her as an example because the hatred toward her has been particularly vitriolic, with much of it coming in the form of television ads from rich outsiders.

• Why can’t Congress work together for the betterment of the country rather than for their political party? There was a time when members of Congress put aside partisan politics to do the right thing, working together and compromising to accomplish important legislation. They would fight the good fight, then socialize afterward, remaining friends. Apparently and sadly, that is a bygone era.

• Why are so many people so disrespectful of those who serve in elected office? These days, it takes a large amount of courage to run for political office. And you better not have any skeletons in your closet because it’s a given that your opponent and his or her hired gun of a political consultant will find them.

• Why can’t people be more considerate and courteous? Why not fill out most of your check before you get to the checkout counter so you don’t delay others? Why not use turn signals, or get in the left lane at fourlane intersections so others can turn right on red, or leave a safe distance between the car in front of you when stopped at a traffic light? Why is it necessary to pull up within two inches of the car in front of you. If you get rear-ended, then you rear-end the car in front of you. A little common sense goes a long way. And why do some drivers insist on going beyond the white line at intersections? What is the deal with that?

• Why do people continue to text and drive when it has been proven so dangerous. The same goes for using your cell phone, eating, reading or wearing earphones while driving. I saw a lady the other day stopped at a traffic light eating a bowl of cereal. I guess my look was one of disapproval, so she gave me the finger. I hope she had a nice day. I am always conscious of school zones. It can be an expensive speeding ticket if you ignore them. But why is it that I often see mothers with children in the car speeding through school zones?

• Speaking of speeding, why is it that drivers seem to be in a bad mood, speeding and cutting you off in traffic? Road rage is alive and well. Are they that way at home? Remember when the slogan, “Courtesy is contagious” was popular?

• I have been shopping around for a new car. But the problem is, they are all ugly and look the same. Whatever happened to originality in designing cars? I long for the cars of the ’50s and ’60s, when you could tell all of them apart from one another. It used to be that grills were supposed to indicate a smile; today, cars seem to be angry. It’s aggressive designing, I am told. All the car-makers have the same colors. Whatever happened to green cars – my favorite color? And two-tone cars? Does the current styling of cars really save that much gas? Or has originality gone out of the car business?

• What is the deal with people who spend their whole day on Facebook? Like Betty White, I think it is an awful waste of time. I do not want to know what someone had for breakfast and what they plan to do every minute of the day. Who cares? If you want to get in touch with me, don’t do it on Facebook.

• And finally, where have all the years gone? My theme song these days is “Like a Rock” by Bob Seger. Check it out, and you will see what I mean.
