| ART/EXHIBITS THROUGH MARCH 31: ART BY BRAD SMITH, The Bossier Arts Council is happy to announce Brad Smith as the latest local artist for the Emerging Artist Gallery. Smith is a largely selftaught painter who works various styles and subject matters. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. THROUGH MARCH 31: BPCC FACULTY ART SHOW, Kelly McDade’s exhibit “POPular Mechanics” will be on display at the Donna Service Gallery, located in Building A on the college campus. The art exhibition is the first of the 2016 spring semester in the gallery.

APRIL 1: POETRY READING AND OPEN READING; In conjunction with the Awkward Family Photos exhibit at Centenary College’s Meadows Museum of Art, a poetry reading and open microphone opportunity will start at 5:30 p.m. featuring distinguished author Genaro Ky Ly Smith.

APRIL 1-MAY 31: GINGER BRIGGS AND KAREN LA BEAU will have pieces of their art displayed at the East Bank Gallery. She is self-taught, specializing in colored pencil and acrylic paint and greatly influenced by nature. An opening reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. April 9 at the Bossier Arts Council, located at 630 Barksdale Blvd., Bossier City.

APRIL 2: AZALEA FESTIVAL, Plan to spend the day at the R.W. Norton Art Gallery’s Azalea Festival. Showcasing over 15,000 plants including approximately100 native and hybrid varieties of azaleas at the prime time of the year, the event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the 40-acre gardens behind the museum. While enjoying a tour through the beautiful gardens, have your garden questions answered by volunteers from Northwest Louisiana Master Gardeners, the Shreveport Garden Study Club and the Society for Louisiana Irises.

APRIL 2-MAY 15: BLOOM!, In coordination with our first ever Azalea Festival, the R.W. Norton Art Gallery will be showcasing local talent in the form of a new exhibition, BLOOM! This exhibition will focus on flowering plants and the beauty of nature. APRIL 7-MAY 7: “OUTLIER,” April is National Sexual Assault Awareness month and Outlier is a multi-sensory fine art photography exhibit featuring the personal stories of sexual assault survivors to raise social awareness, dispel victim stigma, foster restorative justice and bring the subject of sexual assault out into open discussion. An opening reception is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on April 7 at artspace and the exhibit will run through May 7. Corbett will also conduct an artist talk at 6 p.m. on April 14; admission is free. A mini film fest from 5 to 9 p.m. on April 11 and throughout the month is at Shreve Memorial Library. THROUGH APRIL 9: MEREDITH PIPER ARTIST RECEPTION will be from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Agora Borealis for her encased weavings art show. The reception is free to the public. Piper’s encased weavings will be displayed through April 9.

THROUGH APRIL 30: CUTTING DOWN THE TREE OF LIFE, This two-part display, conceived by alumna Emily Fultz, contrasts vibrant Haitian “Tree of Life” paintings from the 1970s and 1980s with contemporary photographs of Haiti’s deforestation for charcoal fuel production, captured by New York City photojournalist Jonathan Auch is hosted by the Meadows Museum of Art on the Centenary College campus. THROUGH MAY 15: #HASHTAGGING HISTORY EXHIBIT, This special exhibit will explore famous hashtags as well as a unique look at historical figures through a modern format. The exhibit is in the North Wing Exhibition Galleries. APRIL 16-17: MELROSE PLANTATION ARTS AND CRAFTS FESTIVAL, this annual festival held in Natchitoches Parish will feature the original Clementine Hunter murals on the second floor of the African House. The festival will feature many of the same vendors that visitors expect to see. The festival will open at 9 a.m. on the first day and 10 a.m. the second day. APRIL 23: PINEYWOODS SUPPER CLUB, Mahaffey Farms, a family farm located in Princeton, Louisiana, and Sainte Terre, an events venue located in Benton, Louisiana, are joining forces to bring a new dining experience to the Shreveport-Bossier area. The event is a collaborative production presented by Power & Grace School of Performing Arts, under the direction of Christy Holden, in partnership with Louisiana Dance Collective, under the direction of Emily Smith and River Cities Dance Foundation, a local nonprofit organization devoted to promoting the art of dance in Shreveport- Bossier City. Prior to the show, River Cities Dance Foundation will also present Life is the Bubbles Sip & Sea at 5 p.m. inside the Strand Theatre. APRIL 14, 16: “SUSANNAH,” Written during the McCarthy era as a reaction to artistic persecution, Susannah is based loosely on the Apocryphal tale of Susannah and the Elders. Carlisle Floyd’s opera is a collaboration of the Hurley School of Music and Marjorie Lyons Playhouse and is the final production of MLP’s 2015-16 Why, Unto Others? season. This production is fully staged and supported by an orchestra comprised of members of the Shreveport Symphony, conducted by Kermit Poling.

APRIL 14-17, 21-23: “THE LITTLE MERMAID,” Tickets go on sale March 28 for the SBC debut of the Broadway version of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Stage Center’s second production in their fifth anniversary season, with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and a book by Doug Wright.
