PUPPY RESCUE’S FUND-RAISER

After - the four puppies all made it and up for ad

Louisiana Baby Mommas Rescue saves dogs from shelters

Dog lovers can’t imagine life without a dog. Good, bad, old, sick, ugly, fat, we don’t care. Dog lovers are kind and generous people, and if anyone ever depended on the kindness of strangers, it is puppies abandoned or left in shelters, their mothers and pregnant dogs.

“Rescue animals often have horrible beginnings, but it is our goal to help them with their journey to a happily ever after. All animals deserve a loving happy home,” said Jean Williams Johnson, founder of the Shreveport rescue nonprofit, Louisiana Baby Mommas.

Through the group’s annual fund-raiser, “Fairfield Avenue Goes to the Dogs,” a Community Foundation of North Louisiana Give for Good event, Johnson hopes to raise the money to get an oxygen concentrator (an incubator that takes in oxygen and filters out nitrogen) and to pay the considerable vet bills that come with these rescues.

It’s a party for dogs and people from 5 - 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at Fairfield Manor Bed & Breakfast, 2300 Fairfield Ave. Admission is $20.

“There will be appetizers provided by Fairfield Manor B&B, cocktails, valet parking, and guests may bring their dogs as long as the dogs are on a leash at all times. Some of the dogs available for adoption will also be there,” she said.

“We do not have employees, nor do we receive any local, state or government funds. It is completely run by volunteers. They make a huge contribution to our success, and we welcome your help in volunteering time and talent. It can be a very rewarding experience,” Johnson said. Individuals who know how to raise funds are particularly helpful, but others help with foster care, feeding and cleaning, adoption events, transporting pets to vet appointments or events, and outreach to the community.

“Louisiana Baby Mommas specializes in rescuing puppies that often require around-theclock monitoring and bottle feeding. It can be very heartbreaking, but very heartwarming as you watch them grow right before your eyes,” said Johnson.
