On Friday, Jan. 14, R.W. Norton Art Gallery hosted an opening event for Carnival: Mardi Gras Then & Now. Local artist Emily Ellis Welch has guest-curated an exhibit featuring the unique history and traditions of Mardi Gras. The event featured Mardi Gras-themed hors d'oeuvres and a signature cocktail. The presentation will be on display through Feb. 27. — Mark Crawford

The Film Prize 2022 kickoff was held on Jan. 27 at Central ArtStation. The $50,000 grand prize is returning. Filmmakers worldwide are invited to submit their short film – five to 15 minutes in length – the main requirement being that the film is shot in Louisiana. If the winning film is shot in Caddo Parish, the filmmaker gets $50,000 – the largest cash prize in the world for a short narrative film. If the film is shot anywhere else in Louisiana, the film wins $25,000. Submissions are due Jul. 12. The top 20 finalists will be announced on Aug. 9. Prize Fest will take place Oct. 13-23. — Mary Ann Van Osdell
