When key competitors closed or transferred services from inner city locations, Willis-Knighton retained and expanded its flagship hospital at its original location in Queensborough.

Because Willis-Knighton is truly local, with no out-of-town management or boards in control, it is firmly rooted in the local economy, doing business with local banks and businesses and supporting educational institutions essential to our community. This local focus to buy, build and boost local businesses, colleges and universities helps to assure economic opportunities for minority and women-owned businesses and the people they employ. And as the largest nongovernment employer, Willis-Knighton has a diverse employee population with opportunities for benefits, growth and advancement for its own employees, over 7,000 of them.

One of the hallmarks of Willis-Knighton is its unique tithe: the bottom-line philanthropy. This dedicates a minimum of 10% of the health system's earnings to worthwhile community projects and programs.
