Shreveport Chamber of Commerce Building

The Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, who recently took possession of the original Shreve Memorial Library building at 400 Edwards Street, isn’t letting grass grow under their feet as they begin work on long-needed repairs to the important historic structure.

The week of June 26, a crew from Hand Construction Company began the prep work for securing the cornice and replacing the roof. As the cornice is being repaired, the tile roof will be removed, and the original felt will be replaced with a non-permeable membrane. Once completed, the tile will be replaced, and work will begin on the existing flat roof(s). The roofing portion of the project is expected to take about 110 days, weather permitting.

State capital outlay dollars for needed window and elevator replacements were won through the efforts of State Senator Barrow Peacock and the NW Louisiana delegation. Rehabbing a building that is a century old that has had limited significant maintenance and repairs can be costly. Chamber president Tim Magner says they are roughly 20% of the way to their fundraising goal for it. “We are continuing to do outreach,” Magner says.

The beautiful building is open to the public on regular business days, and it is worth a stop to see the wonderful entrance lobby. Magner reminds that all are invited to the 40@400 Edwards Open House on Thursday, July 13, from 4-6. The celebration will focus on the Chamber’s 40 years at 400 Edwards Street and what is yet to come!
