Coloring book offers unique form of therapy

Haley Reggio Pederson

Most people will tell you that the biggest fight with cancer is a battle of the mind. I agree as a person who has been fighting for over four years. I was given several “Positive Thoughts” adult coloring books during my first chemo treatment plan but really picked it up after my third. During this time, I realized the fantastic benefits of coloring as an adult for emotional and physical therapy.

Have you ever heard of the “Winning the Fight Against Cancer” coloring book? No? Well, buckle up because it will take you on a seriously fun and transformative journey. You’ll be able to channel your inner Picasso while focusing your energies on kicking cancer to the curb. Sounds pretty awesome, right? Let me break it down for you.

First off, let’s chat about the magic of visualization. Picture this: You’re looking at a page filled with cartoonish illustrations of white blood cells, our bodies’ brave little warriors, locked in epic combat against those cancerous villains. As your colored pencils bring these cells to life, you’re not just coloring, you’re creating your own powerful visual representation of the fight happening inside your body. Each stroke you make symbolizes the strength and resilience of those white cells, overwhelming and annihilating cancer. How empowering is that? It’s like cheering for your own internal team, showing them you’re in this together, you and your body against cancer.

Now, let’s talk about the transformative power of creative energy. Whenever you pick up that coloring book, you focus your creative energy on something productive and positively captivating. You’re stepping away from your illness for a while, creating a world where you’re not just a patient but an artist, a creator and an imaginer. And guess what? This process doesn’t just help distract you from the big “C.” It also engages your brain in ways you might not have thought of, stimulating cognitive functions and fostering emotional healing. It’s like a supercharge for your mind and soul!

Also, if you’ve ever faced neuropathy symptoms – numbness, weakness or pain from nerve damage, often a side effect of cancer treatments – you know how rough it can be. But here’s where the coloring book rides to your rescue once more. While coloring those intricate designs, your hands and fingers get a safe, gentle workout. It’s a non-threatening, enjoyable form of physical therapy, helping you maintain and possibly even regain some of the mobility you’ve been missing.

Then, there’s that delicious dopamine rush! Who needs a roller coaster ride when you can get your thrill from the sheer joy and satisfaction of completing a page in your coloring book? Each time you fill in that last bit of white space, it’s like crossing a finish line. You did it! You created something beautiful, and that sense of accomplishment triggers a flood of feel-good chemicals in your brain.

You’re not just winning against the coloring book but also against your cancer in your way!

Finally, this simple act of coloring doesn’t stop when you put the book away. It kickstarts a chain reaction in your brain that keeps your creative juices flowing and your mind stimulated long after you’ve capped your markers. It’s an activity that truly bridges the gap between therapy and recreation, providing benefits that extend beyond the duration of your coloring session.

In conclusion, the “Winning the Fight Against Cancer” coloring book isn’t just a bundle of pages. It’s a weapon, a healing tool, a dopamine booster, a physical therapist and a best friend all rolled into one.

It lets you visualize and cheer on the microscopic battle raging inside your body while engaging your creative mind and providing physical relief. This coloring book brings color onto the pages and into your life, painting your fight against cancer with shades of resilience, creativity and joy.

So, what are you waiting for? Grab those pencils, and let’s start coloring our way to victory! Because every warrior deserves a little color in their life, especially when the battle is against cancer.
