Every fall for the past decade, Shreveport has become a mecca for aspiring filmmakers eager to see whether their artistic vision is worthy of taking home the annual Film Prize, part of Prize Fest, the brainchild of local culture promoter Gregory Kallenberg.

Two of the prizes up for grabs each year are the Fashion Prize and the Music Prize. Fashion Prize announced its five designer finalists during a live Facebook broadcast on June 16. The competitors will be judged this month, and the grand prize winner will receive a $2,500 cash prize.

The Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek, Calif., put the exhibition together in 2018, asking artists to use Kahlo herself as a theme, her garden, her Mexican culture and her fashion. The show set records at the Bedford Gallery before traveling to New Mexico, Florida, Alabama and Texas before coming to Shreveport.

But in the last year, he’s been laid off, diagnosed with cancer, and is struggling to make ends meet.

The Shreveport Art Club was founded in 1921 by a group of hobbyists who decided to form the club to exhibit their works and learn from each other, according to the club’s treasurer, Judy Horne. She said they found an old picture of some of the early members at the LSU-S Archives, where most of their memorabilia are housed.

The group designates a Champion of Louisiana as a person who serves out of love for Louisiana, its people and its future in contributing to the local economy, health and wellness, safety education, preservation or other initiatives.
