These last few months have continued to be chaotic and difficult for many of us. As an Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, watching the events unfold overseas has been highly triggering and disheartening for many friends and battle buddies. Covid and our political climate have continued to send anxiety, depression and suicide rates climbing.

Taking care of our mental health is so important during the holidays. Although it is a time of joy and celebration, it can be a time of stress, depression and anxiety. Unknowingly, we set our expectations high and try to soak in all the fun and excitement these events bring.

2020 has brought us so much to deal with. In January, as a counseling practice, we were already full. We were already dealing with a 200% increase in teen self-harm — a 19% increase in first-year college students being diagnosed with anxiety disorders and depression.

In today’s society I see all forms of mothers. I see working mothers. Single mothers. Mothers with mental health struggles. Mothers who have been affected by sexism, abuse and oversexualization. Women in our society have had a difficult go throughout history, but being a mother appears to be even harder and filled with toxic stress land mines.
