Neglected corner downtown gets a makeover

Walking bustling Milam Street in the 1950s and ’60s was a feast for the senses. Selber Bros. department store was front and center on the shaded street where beautifully decorated storefronts faced a movie theater and popular Chinese restaurant.

“Caddo Common will be very uncommon,” she said. “It will be an urban park that will help revitalize an area that is already on the grow by offering a venue for weddings, receptions, Shakespeare in the Park … a production for blankets on the ground,” Atchison said.

Center provides resources for those battling alcoholism

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men are twice as likely to binge drink than women, and they consistently have higher rates of alcoholrelated deaths and hospitalizations than women. Male drivers involved in fatal car accidents are twice as likely to have been intoxicated.

The luncheon provided activities that were educational and encouraging to influential men and women who could possibly become champions of heart and stroke health and prevention.

Philadelphia Center plays host to event supporting survivors

Dec. 1 marks the annual World AIDS Day – a day of raising awareness, showing support and promoting advocacy for those living with HIV and commemorating those who have died. The global health day was first started in 1988, and has since become a day of recognition and calls to action.
