Asian Spring Festival: “Pista ng Bayan”

The Asian Spring Festival will take place on Saturday, March 30, from 4-9 p.m. at The ASEANA Asian Gardens of Shreveport at 800 Texas Ave. This year’s theme is “Pista ng Bayan” (Country Fiesta) Philippine festival. The highlight of the festival is the “Santa Cruzan” (Holy Cross) Parade. This is a colorful and popular parade that honors the finding of the True Cross by Helena of Constantinople (known as Reyna Elena) and Constantine the Great, who converted to Christianity. Traditionally, beautiful single ladies and teens are selected and dressed in beautiful gowns and parade on the streets under colorful floral arches carrying a symbol of virtue. It culminates with Reyna Elena holding the cross.

The parade and cultural program start at 5 p.m. There will be food demonstrations by celebrated Filipino New Orleans chef and restaurant owner Cris Pasia. Philippine cultural dances like the Sinulog and Tinikling Bamboo will be performed to traditional songs. Enjoy the beautiful Asian gardens, sample roasted pig cooked Filipino style. Food vendors offer authentic Asian food as well as local favorites. There will also be arts and crafts booths. The event closes with a spectacular fireworks display by Kris Durr’s Pyromania.

The event is free to the public. Donations go toward the upkeep and maintenance of the garden and presenting the festivals. For details, call (318) 401-8078 or (318) 402-2675; or aseanafoundationshv@gmail.com.
