Gingerbread House: On Oct. 11, The Gingerbread House hosted their annual luncheon at Horseshoe Casino’s Riverdome. The guest speaker was Katarina Rosenblatt, Ph.D., who is a teenage sex traffi cking survivor. The Gingerbread House is a children’s advocacy center that exists to serve children, ages 2-16, who are alleged victims of sexual or severe physical abuse. – Mark Crawford
CADA: The Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse of Northwest Louisiana hosted their annual awareness dinner at the Shreveport Convention Center on Wednesday, Oct. 11. Actor and TV host Tom Arnold was the featured guest speaker at the event. Arnold talked about his battle with drugs and alcohol and how he overcame addiction through rehab. The Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse of Northwest Louisiana provides affordable, effective treatment to those with addiction. Their mission is to educate, counsel and treat those of all ages who suffer from alcoholism and other addictive diseases regardless of their ability to pay. – Mark Crawford

Aioli Dinner: The Frierson Plantation once again played host to the Aioli Dinner Supper Club fund-raising dinner. The fourcourse wine dinner raises funds for Louisiana A+ Schools, which is an arts education program for the George Rodrigue Foundation of the Arts. Locally, South Highlands Elementary Magnet is a Louisiana A+ School. The menu included Gulf Oyster Pan Roast, Grilled Redfish, Smothered Pork Chops and a Mini Sweet Corn Bundt Cake, served with Sweetport blueberry ice cream. – Mark Crawford

Prize Fest: Downtown Shreveport was abuzz with activity the first weekend of October with the Louisiana Film Prize. In its sixth year, the Film Prize weekend has expanded to also include the Louisiana Music Prize and Louisiana Food Prize competitions. Eleazar Mandragon, of Ki Mexico fame, won the Louisiana Food Prize, and local band Star Chamber won the Louisiana Music Prize. Twenty short films were shown in two different slates, where more than 3,500 people viewed and voted for the winning fi lm, “Exit Strategy,” which takes home the $50,000 grand prize. – Mark Crawford

Shreveport Opera Halloween Party: Hosted by its own “Queen of the Night,” Sarina Styles and DJ Jay Whatley and catered by Marilynn’s Place, the Shreveport Opera and generous sponsors engaged new and existing patrons of the performing arts at a Halloween party.
