Opening: The Spring Street Museum had a grand re-opening to showcase upgrades with a ribbon-cutting May 5. A harpist played as people viewed the exhibits. This was one of many Give for Good events.

Art Market: Highland Handmade, a Highland-centric market offering art, goods, vintage and more, was held May 9 in the parking lot of Robinson’s Rescue. Almost all of the businesses and individuals either live or work in Highland. Derick Jones, owner of Olive Street Thrift and Vintage; Kate Hesson of Zombee Candle; and April Dahm, former director of the Texas Avenue Maker’s Fair, helped coordinate the firsttime event, which included food vendors and performances by The Gems of Cairo.

Strand: The Strand Theatre in downtown Shreveport hosted their season announcement party May 12 on the historic stage of the theater. There are nine shows this year, including “The Producers,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat,” “Annie and the Official Blues Brother Revue.” Tickets are on sale now. Atlas: Everyone was feeling groovy and far out at the annual membership drive for the Krewe of Atlas. The event was held May 16 at the Woman’s Department Club. Attendees dressed in costumes portraying the ’60s era, fringe and fish nets. Music from the ’60s played, album covers and cardboard lava lamps were used for decoration, and food consisted of various fondues.

Shower: A household shower for Ryan Bagley and Amy Martin was held May 16 at the Fairfield home of Debbie and Eddie Glassell. Glassell retired as a gastroenterologist in Tennessee and is now working as a physician in Shreveport. This is the first party the couple has given since he retired and moved back.

Book-signing: William Joyce, Academy Award-winning filmmaker, bestselling author and animation pioneer, signed copies of his latest book May 30 at Toy Fair. Presented as a picture book memoir, “Billy’s Booger” is Joyce’s latest book, 40 years in the making. Shreveporters were first to purchase the books in advance of its national release June 2. Full of nostalgic references to a time when television was black-and-white and Sunday newspapers had things called “the funnies,” this wildly fun storywithin-a-story is based loosely on Joyce’s fourth-grade year and includes a sewn-in mini-book of Joyce’s very first book. “Billy’s Booger” is the tale of the world’s smartest booger and one that had Joyce sent to the principal’s office at A.C. Steere Elementary School.
